CHAPTER 18

CAT

Every muscle in my body is relaxed, and my skin is softer than silk. This morning, Everett dropped me off at a fancy spa while he hung out with Benny.

I’ve been thoroughly pampered and massaged.

The skin treatments were out of this world. I’m positive my skin has never felt so amazing. I can’t recall the name of them all, but there was wax, seaweed, and even some posh mud involved in the series of skin therapies. I’ve heard about the healing properties of mud but must admit that I was a skeptic. Until now. I’m a full-on convert. Cover me with dirt any day.

If I lived in Ann Arbor, I’d have a weekly standing appointment for this place. They’d own me. I’m a believer.

Do I feel bad that Everett is going above and beyond to show me he cares? A little bit, yes. I don’t need him to shower me with gifts or take me on swoon-worthy adventures to get to know him as a person—which is all I really need. I want to truly know the man who helped in the creation of my daughter. Plain and simple. The rest…is unnecessary.

At the same time, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t enjoying every second. I mean, my skin has never been softer.

The sun warms my face as I exit the spa. It’s a beautiful Michigan summer day. I must admit, I miss the weather here. People often complain about the winters, but it’s the seasons I love. Each one is perfect and unique, carrying attributes that I love.

Everett waits in his parked car in the circle pickup loop in front of the building.

I open the passenger door and glance toward the back, where Benny sleeps in her car seat. “Have you been waiting long?” I ask, closing the door behind me.

“Nope. Not long at all. How was it?” He gifts me with a smile, and my heartbeat quickens.

I buckle the seat belt and clear my throat. “Good. No, great. I loved everything about it.”

“I knew you would.” There’s pure happiness in his voice.

“So what’s the plan? Have a low-key rest of the day?” I question.

He scoffs. “It’s like you don’t know me at all. You brought the items I suggested, right?”

“Yep. They’re in my bag in the back.”

“Good.”

“Are you going to tell me why I need to bring baby blankets and jeans in the middle of summer?” I grin.

“You’ll see.”

“You’re obsessed with surprises.” I chuckle. “They give you life.”

“No truer words have ever been spoken.” He shoots me a wink.

“Alright, I trust you,” I say.

“That’s all I ask,” he says with a smile as he pulls out of the parking lot.
